«Martín Fierro» is an Argentine epic poem by José Hernández, published by Edicomunicación in hardback (286 pages, in Spanish).
The epic poem narrates the life of Martín Fierro, a gaucho forced by conscription to leave his land to serve on the frontier; from then on, injustices and hardships turn him into a matrero. With a markedly popular voice, the work portrays rural life and gaucho customs, and denounces corruption and social inequality.
This edition belongs to the Martín Fierro series, which groups its two parts, and is number 69 of the Colección Cultura, with edition, notes and vocabulary by Alberto Laurent.
A work frequently read in schools and among those interested in the classics of Latin American literature.
José Hernández was an Argentine journalist, poet, and politician best known as the author of the epic poem Martín Fierro. In his tribute, his birthday is celebrated in Argentina as a national holiday, called Tradition Day.
