«Los sótanos del Vaticano» is the satirical novel by André Gide, published by Alianza Editorial in paperback (222 pages, in Spanish).
Subtitled Farsa, the novel follows Lafcadio Wluiki, a young Parisian who, upon learning he is an heir, travels to Rome and becomes involved in an ecclesiastical scam: there is a rumour that the pope is captive. With irony and an adventurous pace, Gide interweaves swindlers, aristocrats and false devotions in a satire on deceit and credulity.
The work was originally published in 1914 under the title Les Caves du Vatican and belongs to the collection Biblioteca fundamental de nuestro tiempo, number 36.
For readers of classic European fiction and social satires; André Gide was a Nobel Prize in Literature laureate.
