Nineteenth-century English writer, mathematician and photographer, author of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking-Glass.
His real name was Charles Lutwidge Dodgson and he spent his whole career as a mathematics don at Christ Church, Oxford.
He invented Alice in 1862 to entertain Alice Liddell and her sisters during a boat trip on the Thames.
He published many books on logic and mathematics under his real name, including Symbolic Logic.
He was a pioneering photographer, considered one of the finest child portraitists of the nineteenth century.
He died of pneumonia at 65, two weeks before his sixty-sixth birthday.
