«L'enfant noir» is Camara Laye's autobiographical novel, published by Librairie Plon in 1976, in French and in a paperback edition.
The author reconstructs his childhood in Kouroussa, in Upper Guinea: daily life, traditions, customs and rites of his people. The narrative moves from childhood to leaving the country to study in France, and reveals the clash between the traditional African world and Western modernity.

Camara Laye was a writer from Guinea. His most well-known works are The African Child, a novel based loosely on his own childhood, and The Radiance of the King.
