«La búsqueda de la lengua perfecta» is Umberto Eco's essay on universal languages, published by Grijalbo in paperback (318 pages, in Spanish).
Umberto Eco covers almost two thousand years of European history in search of a universal language: from the myth of the Tower of Babel and the Kabbalah to artificial and auxiliary languages such as Esperanto, via Ramon Llull and Dante. The essay raises the conflict between a common vehicular language and the defence of one's own linguistic traditions.
Translation by María Pons. The Italian original was published in 1993 as «La ricerca della lingua perfetta nella cultura europea».
For readers interested in philosophy of language, linguistics and history of ideas.

Umberto Eco was an Italian medievalist, philosopher, semiotician, novelist, cultural critic, and political and social commentator. In English, he is best known for his popular 1980 novel The Name of the Rose, a historical mystery combining semiotics in fiction with biblical analysis, medieval studies and literary theory, as well as Foucault's Pendulum, his 1988 novel which touches on the history of occultism and its contemporary interpretation through the new age movement.
