He was born in Alessandria, Italy, on 5 January 1932 and died in Milan on 19 February 2016.
He earned his doctorate in philosophy at the University of Turin with a thesis on the aesthetics of Thomas Aquinas.
He was one of the most influential semioticians of the 20th century and taught for decades at the University of Bologna.
The Name of the Rose (1980) was his first novel and has sold more than 50 million copies worldwide.
He built a personal library of around 50,000 volumes, one of the largest in private hands.
