This edition of "El diablo cojuelo" and "La vida del Buscón" presents two classic works of Spanish Golden Age literature. "El diablo cojuelo" by Luis Vélez de Guevara is a picaresque novel that narrates the adventures and misadventures of a student who releases a devil from a bottle, who in return shows him the hidden reality of Madrid society. "La vida del Buscón" by Francisco de Quevedo is another picaresque novel that follows the life of a young man named Pablos in his attempt to rise socially through deception and tricks. Both works offer a critical and satirical view of the society of their time, exploring themes such as hypocrisy, corruption, and the struggle for survival.

Luis Vélez de Guevara was a Spanish dramatist and novelist. He was born at Écija and was of Jewish converso descent. After graduating as a sizar at the University of Osuna in 1596, he joined the household of Rodrigo de Castro, Cardinal-Archbishop of Seville, and celebrated the marriage of Philip III in a poem signed Vélez de Santander, a name which he continued to use until some years later.
