«Cuando ya no importe» is the novel by Juan Carlos Onetti, published by Círculo de Lectores in hardback (213 pages, in Spanish).
The book is the diary of Carr, an intellectual abandoned by his wife who sees in the breakup an opportunity to rebuild his life. He settles in Santa María and works at a dam, a front for smugglers. Onetti thus portrays the impossibility of changing one's fate and the existential apathy of the city.
Juan Carlos Onetti Borges was a Uruguayan novelist and author of short stories.
