He was born in Beaconsfield, Buckinghamshire in 1948 and published his first short story at the age of thirteen.
He worked as a journalist and as a press officer for the Central Electricity Generating Board before becoming a full-time author.
In 1983 he published The Colour of Magic, the first novel in the Discworld series, which eventually ran to 41 volumes.
In 2007 he was diagnosed with a rare early-onset form of Alzheimer's disease, which he made public.
He was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 2009 for services to literature.
