Mort is the fourth installment in Terry Pratchett's Discworld series. This time, Mortimer, a dreamy and somewhat absent-minded young man, becomes Death's apprentice, taking on the task of freeing souls from their carnal envelope. However, Mort is not entirely prepared for this task, and in one of his first missions, he decides to free the soul of the assassin instead of that of the princess who is about to be murdered, interfering with the designs of Fate and causing great chaos. Meanwhile, Death, after delegating his work to Mort, dedicates himself to drinking, playing dice, and philosophizing.

Sir Terence David John Pratchett was an English author, humorist, and satirist, best known for the Discworld series of 41 comic fantasy novels published between 1983 and 2015, and for the apocalyptic comedy novel Good Omens (1990), which he co-wrote with Neil Gaiman.
