Jacob (1785-1863) and Wilhelm (1786-1859) worked all their lives as librarians and university professors.
They published the first edition of Children's and Household Tales in 1812; seven revised editions appeared in their lifetimes.
They began the Deutsches Wörterbuch, the great dictionary of the German language, only completed in 1961.
Their collection of tales is, after the Bible, one of the most widely translated German books in the world.
In 1837 they refused to swear loyalty to the king of Hanover and were dismissed, becoming part of the 'Göttingen Seven'.
