He was born in Odense into a very poor family; his father was a shoemaker and his mother a washerwoman.
As a young man he tried to become an opera singer and actor in Copenhagen before turning to writing.
He published his first collection, Fairy Tales Told for Children, in 1835.
He travelled tirelessly through Europe and wrote travel books such as In Spain (1863).
International Children's Book Day is celebrated on 2 April, his birthday.
