Nicolás Guillén was born in the Cuban city of Camagüey in 1902.
Before becoming a renowned poet, he worked as a typographer and journalist.
His first poetry collection, Motivos de son, was published in 1930.
Due to his political criticism, he was arrested and jailed in 1936.
He traveled to Spain in 1937 to report on the Civil War.
