His real name was Ricardo Eliécer Neftalí Reyes Basoalto; he took the pen name 'Pablo Neruda' as a tribute to Jan Neruda.
He served as Chilean consul in several cities in Asia, Spain and Mexico.
He was a member of the Communist Party of Chile and a senator between 1945 and 1948.
He died on 23 September 1973, only twelve days after Pinochet's coup.
His body was exhumed in 2013 to investigate whether he had been poisoned by the dictatorship.
