He was born in San Sebastián and has lived in Hanover (Germany) since 1985.
He published Homeland in 2016; it has sold more than a million copies and won the Premio de la Crítica, the National Narrative Prize and the Strega Europeo.
HBO adapted Homeland as a TV series in 2020.
He was part of the Basque literary collective CLOC in the late 1970s.
He was a candidate for the Princess of Asturias Prize for Letters in 2024.
