Professor Otto Lidenbrock, who teaches mineralogy in Hamburg, discovers a mysterious message in runic characters in an old book. The document is deciphered by his nephew Axel: it is a set of notes in Latin that explain how to reach the center of the Earth through the Sneffels volcano in Iceland. Uncle and nephew decide to undertake this journey and set off for Iceland, where they are joined by the faithful and silent Hans, a local guide, with whom they descend into the crater of the volcano.
