He was born in Chicago in 1928 but spent most of his life in California.
He won the 1963 Hugo Award for the novel The Man in the High Castle, an alternate history about an Axis victory in World War II.
In 1974 he had mystical experiences that he called VALIS and incorporated into his later work.
Films such as Blade Runner, Total Recall and Minority Report are based on his works.
He died in 1982 in Santa Ana, just months before the premiere of Blade Runner.
