He came from one of the most distinguished scientific and literary families in England; his grandfather was the biologist Thomas Huxley.
He lost most of his sight at 17 due to a corneal infection and learned Braille to keep reading.
He published Brave New World in 1932, anticipating genetic engineering, mood drugs and mass consumerism.
From the 1930s he lived in California, where he wrote screenplays for Hollywood and experimented with mescaline.
He died on 22 November 1963, the same day as John F. Kennedy and C. S. Lewis.
