A Tale of Love and Darkness is a moving autobiographical novel by Amos Oz, originally published in Hebrew in 2002. The author narrates his childhood and adolescence in the forties and fifties, in Jerusalem and in the Hulda kibbutz, marked by the tragic existence of his parents: Yehuda, a strict librarian, and Fania, a cultured, romantic and dreamy woman. Caught between them, the future writer is a child who bears on his fragile shoulders the heavy inheritance of his unique ancestors and watches in astonishment the great changes that will mark his life and that of his nascent nation. The narration oscillates back and forth in time and reflects more than a hundred years of family history, four generations of dreamers, scholars, self-centered poets and black sheep, who from Vilna and Odessa, through Poland and Prague, arrived in Israel.

Amos Oz was an Israeli writer, novelist, journalist, and intellectual. He was also a professor of Hebrew literature at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev. From 1967 onwards, Oz was a prominent advocate of a two-state solution to the Israeli–Palestinian conflict.
