Madrid, 1935. Three young teachers, a man and two women, enroll in the Pedagogical Missions with the enthusiasm of bringing culture to the most remote villages. They leave in a truck loaded with books ready to set up a school library in a village in the Sierra de la Culebra. On the way, this group will cross paths with a teenager who travels alone in search of the only relative he has left. Throughout his pilgrimage, the boy will meet hermits, gunslingers, apparitions from beyond, variety companies with mentalists and pedomaniacs, linguists, and students. The idealism of the teachers will clash with a brutal land, and violence will end up breaking out with the fatal appearance of unexpected characters. The novel takes a turn to reappear between mechanical workshops and television documentaries.
