«Stand Firm: Resisting the Self-Improvement Craze» is Svend Brinkmann's essay published by Polity Press in hardback (152 pages, in English).
Brinkmann, a Danish philosopher and psychologist, criticises the current obsession with self-help and continuous improvement. Against the mandate to optimise oneself and always say «yes», he proposes resistance: self-acceptance, attention to the negative, doing without a coach, reading novels and returning to the past.
English translation by Tam McTurk; original in Danish «Stå fast» (Gyldendal, 2014).
For readers who distrust the self-help industry and want a philosophical approach to accepting oneself and living with less pressure.
