«Riña de gatos. Madrid 1936» is the spy novel by Eduardo Mendoza, published by Planeta in hardback (432 pages, in Spanish).
Anthony Whitelands, an English art critic, arrives in Madrid in 1936 to authenticate a painting whose value could change the political course of Spain. He finds himself caught between love affairs, conspiracies and spies. Mendoza combines historical gravity with his subtle humour, for all tragedy is part of the human comedy.
The novel won the Premio Planeta de Novela 2010 and belongs to the Autores Españoles e Iberoamericanos collection.
For readers of historical and spy fiction with an interest in Madrid before the Spanish Civil War.
