She won the Premio La Sonrisa Vertical (1989) with The Ages of Lulu, a novel filmed by Bigas Luna.
She wrote the series Episodes of an Endless War on antifrancoist resistance; five of the six novels appeared in her lifetime.
She was the partner of poet Luis García Montero, with whom she had a son, Mauro.
She wrote regularly in El País and was a prominent voice on the Spanish left.
She died of cancer on 27 November 2021; she received the National Prize for Fiction in 2018.
