«Lucas» is the young adult novel by Kevin Brooks, published by Chicken House in paperback (368 pages, in English).
On an island, Caitlin is fascinated by Lucas, a mysterious boy who arrives that summer. Their bond makes her see life differently, but the distrust of the neighbours turns the outsider into a target of jealousy and hatred. Caitlin tries to stand up to that injustice while attempting to protect him.
The novel was originally published in 2003 and this Chicken House reissue dates from 2006; it has been awarded the Buxtehuder Bulle prize and the Deutscher Jugendliteraturpreis.
Aimed at young readers aged 12 and up, with a realistic romance story that addresses prejudice and intolerance.
Kevin M. Brooks is an English writer. He is best known for young adult novels. His The Bunker Diary, published by Penguin Books in 2013, won the annual Carnegie Medal as the best new book for children or young adults published in the UK. It was a controversial selection by the British librarians.
