The Fires of Eden is a horror novel by American author Dan Simmons, published in 1998. The story takes place in Hawaii, where a series of murders and mysterious disappearances terrorize tourists. Eleanor Perry, a woman who travels to the island in search of peace, becomes involved in a plot that mixes local legends, dark forces, and volcanic eruptions. As Eleanor investigates, she discovers that the current events are related to a 19th-century diary written by one of her ancestors, who lived on the island in the company of Mark Twain. The novel explores the convergence between reality and legend, as the volcano of Mount Pele stirs, foreshadowing imminent danger.

Daniel Joseph Simmons was an American science fiction and horror writer. He was the author of the Hyperion Cantos and the Ilium/Olympos cycles, among other works that span the science fiction, horror, and fantasy genres, sometimes within a single novel. Simmons's genre-intermingling Song of Kali (1985) won the World Fantasy Award. He also wrote mysteries and thrillers, some of which feature the continuing character Joe Kurtz.
