«L'inútil combat» is the novel by Sebastià Juan Arbó, published by Proa in hardback (232 pages, in Catalan).
Set in the Ebro delta, the story follows a marginalised man who ekes out a living in a very harsh rural environment and dreams of leaving that life behind. His figure, close to Dostoevsky's humiliated characters, made the novel a landmark of Catalan existentialist fiction of the 1930s.
Originally published in 1931, this 2003 edition is part of the A tot vent collection, where it appears as volume 1.

Sebastià Juan i Arbó was a Spanish novelist and playwright. He wrote in Catalan and Spanish. He was born in Sant Carles de la Ràpita on 27 October 1902 and died in Barcelona on 3 January 1984. His work includes novels, drama, biographies and translations. He was an honorary member of the Association of Writers in the Catalan Language. In 1948, he won the Premio Nadal.
