«L'Art d'accommoder les bébés» is the essay by Geneviève Delaisi de Parseval and Suzanne Lallemand (Odile Jacob, paperback, 322 pages, in French).
It analyses a century of French 'recipes' for childcare and the contradictions of expert advice on pregnancy, childbirth and child-rearing: breastfeeding, clothing, dummies, parental presence and the carer's role. Psychoanalyst Geneviève Delaisi de Parseval and ethnologist Suzanne Lallemand compare these norms with practices in non-industrial societies.
Originally published on 25 January 2001. In some editions the title carries the subtitle «Cent ans de recettes françaises de puériculture».
A work of interest to those studying motherhood, the history of infant care and the influence of specialists.
