«La tregua» is Primo Levi's autobiographical novel, published by Muchnik Editores, S.A. in paperback (210 pages, in Spanish).
After the liberation of Auschwitz, Primo Levi narrates in the first person the long and tortuous journey back to Turin through a central and eastern Europe devastated by war. The account combines picaresque episodes and moments of anguish as the author describes encounters with Red Army soldiers, civilians and other survivors, portraying the complex humanity that emerges in the most unexpected settings of the conflict.
The work, originally published in 1963 under the title «La tregua», is the continuation of «Si esto es un hombre» and forms part of the Auschwitz trilogy as its second volume. The Spanish edition includes 210 pages and was translated from Italian by Pilar Gómez Bedate.
Primo Michele Levi was a Jewish Italian chemist, partisan, Holocaust survivor and writer. He was the author of several books, collections of short stories, essays, poems and one novel. His best-known works include: If This Is a Man, his account of the year he spent as a prisoner in the Auschwitz concentration camp in Nazi-occupied Poland; and The Periodic Table (1975), a collection of mostly autobiographical short stories, each named after a chemical element which plays a role in each story, which the Royal Institution named the best science book ever written.
