La novela toma el título de un cuadro de Brueghel y se inspira en la vida de Louis Ferdinand Auguste Destouches, o como él firmaba, Celine. Las distintas voces protagonistas que componen la narración iluminan a este personaje. La novela refiere distintos hechos de la Europa inmediatamente anterior a la Segunda Guerra Mundial. Celine, en entredicho durante años por su ideología política, quizás influyó en la generación Beat norteamericana o en los actuales narradores franceses.

Joaquín Leguina Herrán is a Spanish politician and writer. A former member of the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE) from which he was expelled in 2022 over strong differences with Pedro Sánchez, he became the first President of the Community of Madrid, serving from 1983 and 1995. He also was Secretary-General of the Socialist Party of Madrid from 1979 to 1991.
