He was born in Kabul, Afghanistan, on 4 March 1965.
His family first went into exile in Paris in 1976 and later requested political asylum in the United States in 1980.
He worked as an internal medicine physician in California before turning to writing full time.
The Kite Runner, published in 2003, spent more than 100 weeks on the New York Times bestseller list.
In 2006 he was appointed UNHCR Goodwill Ambassador for Afghan refugees.
