La Desesperanza es una novela del autor chileno José Donoso, publicada en 1986. La trama sigue a Mañungo Vera, un cantante de izquierdas que regresa a Chile desde París tras la muerte de Matilde Neruda, enfrentándose a la desoladora realidad política del país bajo la dictadura de Pinochet. A través de diversas tramas secundarias, Donoso construye un informe sobre la desesperanza, retratando el horror cotidiano y la lucha por la conciencia en un contexto opresivo.
José Manuel Donoso Yáñez, was a Chilean writer, journalist and professor. He lived most of his life in Chile, although he spent many years in self-imposed exile in Mexico, the United States and Spain. Although he stated that he had left Chile in the 1960s for personal reasons, after 1973 his exile was also a form of protest against the dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet. He returned to Chile in 1981 and lived there until his death in 1996.
