«La desesperanza» is the novel by Chilean writer José Donoso, published in 1986 by Seix Barral in paperback (329 pages, in Spanish).
The novel follows Mañungo Vera, a left-wing singer who returns from Paris to Santiago during Pinochet's dictatorship to confront the political and personal desolation of his country. Donoso weaves subplots and composes a portrait of collective hopelessness and the difficult attainment of consciousness in an oppressive climate.

José Manuel Donoso Yáñez, was a Chilean writer, journalist and professor. He lived most of his life in Chile, although he spent many years in self-imposed exile in Mexico, the United States and Spain. Although he stated that he had left Chile in the 1960s for personal reasons, after 1973 his exile was also a form of protest against the dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet. He returned to Chile in 1981 and lived there until his death in 1996.
