«La ciudad escarlata» is the historical novel by Hella S. Haasse, published by Salvat in paperback (353 pages, in Spanish).
Set in 16th-century Italy, it is the first-person account of Giovanni Borgia, who after the Battle of Pavia (1525) tries to discover the identity of his true parents. His search leads him through the intricate web of hatreds, secrets and power struggles of the Borgias, and brings him close to Machiavelli and Michelangelo.
It belongs to the Novela histórica collection by Salvat Editores, volume 62; translation by André Martín Koster of the original Dutch De scharlaken stad, published in 1952.
For readers of historical fiction and Renaissance fiction, with a special interest in the Borgias and family mystery.

Hélène "Hella" Serafia Haasse was a Dutch writer, often referred to as the "Grande Dame" of Dutch literature, and whose novel Oeroeg (1948) was a staple for generations of Dutch schoolchildren. Her internationally acclaimed magnum opus is Heren van de Thee, translated to The Tea Lords. In 1988 Haasse was chosen to interview the Dutch Queen for her 50th birthday after which celebrated Dutch author Adriaan van Dis called Haasse "the Queen among authors".
