He was born in Cardiff, Wales, on 5 June 1949.
He began his career as a journalist at the South Wales Echo and the London Evening News before turning to fiction.
His first international bestseller was Eye of the Needle, an espionage thriller published in 1978.
The Pillars of the Earth (1989) took more than three years to write and has sold over 27 million copies.
In 2008 he was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE).
