«Il punitore di se stesso» is the comedy by P. Afro Terence, published by BUR Biblioteca Univ. Rizzoli in paperback (180 pages, in Italian).
Roman comedy that pits two opposite characters: Menedemus voluntarily punishes himself for having pushed his son to enlist in Asia and thwart his marriage to a humble young woman, against the carefree Chremes and his dissolute son Clitipho. The play stands out for its psychological penetration, unusual in Latin comic theatre.
Bilingual edition with Latin text on the facing page; introduction by Dario Del Corno, translation and notes by Gabriella Gazzola. BUR Classici greci e latini collection. Original title: Heautontimorumenos.
Aimed at Latin students and readers of classical theatre who want to compare the Italian text with the original Latin.
