«Frei Luis de Sousa» is Almeida Garrett's romantic drama, published by Editora Ulisseia in paperback (144 pages).
The drama, set at the end of the 16th century, centres on Madalena, tormented by her past, and her family: her second husband, the nobleman Manuel de Sousa Coutinho, her daughter María and the squire Telmo Pais. The appearance of a mysterious pilgrim unleashes the conflict, in a story marked by fate and by Portuguese resistance to Philippine rule.
The work was originally published in 1844 and premiered in 1843; this edition includes the complete text and an introduction by Palmira Nabais.
For students and readers of Portuguese literature, especially those interested in 19th-century Romantic theatre.
