In 1860, China is on the verge of a bloody convulsion. The British Empire decides to intervene to try to control the tense political situation, but it arrives too late. The interests of the French, the authorities, the Taiping rebels and the British Crown come into conflict, generating expectations of lucrative business. Flashman, as always, will benefit from this chaotic situation, trying to get the best possible slice without the authorities noticing his existence. This novel closes, for the moment, the series dedicated to this antihero.

George MacDonald Fraser was a British author and screenwriter. He is best known for a series of works that featured the character Flashman. Over the course of his career he wrote eleven novels and one short-story collection in the Flashman series of novels, as well as non-fiction, short stories, novels and screenplays—including those for the James Bond film Octopussy, The Three Musketeers and an adaptation of his own novel Royal Flash.
