The Cloven Viscount is Italo Calvino's first foray into the fantastic. It tells the story of the Viscount of Terralba, who is split in two by a Turkish cannonball, with both halves continuing to live separately. A symbol of the divided human condition, the story explores the search for wholeness and the complexities of the human soul with wit and fantasy. It is part of the 'Our Ancestors' trilogy, alongside The Nonexistent Knight and The Baron in the Trees.
