«El tesoro» is the novel by Miguel Delibes, published by Destino in paperback (127 pages, in Spanish).
A peasant ploughing a firebreak discovers a Celtiberian treasure: bracelets, rings, earrings and pendants of gold and silver in a jar. The find attracts archaeologists, but the villagers, torn between greed and suspicion, see the excavations as outsiders wanting to steal what is theirs. Delibes portrays the clash between science and elemental passions, and denounces the abandonment of the Castilian countryside.
The work belongs to the Áncora y Delfín collection (no. 590). Delibes was inspired by real events involving archaeologists close to him.
For readers of Delibes and of Castilian rural fiction, with an interest in the clash between tradition and administration.
