The Parrot's Theorem is a novel by French writer Denis Guedj, published in 2008. The story follows Monsieur Pierre Ruche, an old bookseller in Paris, who receives a letter from a mathematician friend from Brazil whom he has not seen since World War II. Almost simultaneously, he learns that his friend has died in mysterious circumstances. Rereading the letter, full of mathematical references, Monsieur Ruche believes he detects an encrypted message that reveals the enigma of his old companion. It is an original, didactic and entertaining novel that has been hailed by French critics as The World of Sofia of mathematics.
Denis Guedj was a French novelist and a professor of the History of Science at Paris VIII University. He was born in Setif. He spent many years devising courses and games to teach adults and children math. He is the author of Numbers: The Universal Language and of the novel The Parrot's Theorem. He died in Paris.
