He was born in Kyoto, Japan, on 12 January 1949.
Before becoming a novelist he ran a Tokyo jazz club called Peter Cat.
He says he decided to write a novel while watching a Yakult Swallows baseball game in 1978.
His debut novel Hear the Wind Sing won the Gunzō prize for new writers in 1979.
He is a dedicated long-distance runner and has written an essay devoted to his running practice.
