Persia, 17th century. A girl without a dowry, after her father's death, moves with her mother to Isfahan, where a relative takes them in as servants. Forced to accept a temporary marriage, she finds an escape in carpet weaving: her uncle, a designer at the shah's court, teaches her the symbolism of the motifs and vegetable dyes of that tradition.
