El mundo alucinante is an adventure novel by Cuban writer Reinaldo Arenas, published in 1997. The novel narrates the adventures of the Mexican friar Servando Teresa de Mier, a historical figure who lived between the 18th and 19th centuries. Through his travels through Spain, France, England, Italy, the United States, and Cuba, Arenas weaves a story full of persecutions, exiles, and imprisonments, giving it a fabulous and almost mythical dimension. The work is a sample of Cuban Baroque and the author's rebellion against all dogmatism.

Reinaldo Arenas was a Cuban poet, novelist, and playwright who is known as a vocal critic of Fidel Castro, the Cuban Revolution, and the Cuban government. His memoir of the Cuban dissident movement and of being a political prisoner, Before Night Falls, was dictated after his escape to the United States during the 1980 Mariel boatlift and published posthumously. Arenas, who was dying of AIDS, killed himself in 1990.
