In a mountain village, Lena and Guillén, two step-siblings, share a simple life and an unbreakable bond. However, an unexpected event separates them, transforming their childhood complicity into a youthful love fueled by sporadic encounters and letters. The Spanish Civil War finds them on opposite sides: Lena as a volunteer nurse for the rebel side in Oviedo, and Guillén fighting with the Republican forces. Despite the danger, Guillén embarks on a risky journey to reunite with Lena, but the war will test their love. Later, during World War II, their paths will cross in Warsaw, Tangier, and post-war Spain, confronting them with the dilemma of how to love each other when their political ideals separate them.
