«El egoísta» is the novel by Nativel Preciado, published in 1999 by Editorial Planeta in hardback (254 pages, in Spanish).
Baltasar Orellana, powerful and solitary, loses his memory after an inexplicable event. When he recovers it, he relives his loves, the abuses he committed, and the hatred he arouses. The novel portrays a stage of Spain's recent history and the fragility of power, with echoes of a figure who disappeared in the early nineties.
