«Der alte König in seinem Exil» is the autobiographical account by Arno Geiger, published by Carl Hanser Verlag in hardback (192 pages, in German).
Arno Geiger accompanies his father for years after the Alzheimer's diagnosis. The disease dissolves his memories and his orientation, but the old man retains vitality, humour, cunning and dignity. Amid walks and absurd conversations, he rediscovers the person behind the illness and rebuilds a filial relationship that seemed lost.
Work originally published in 2011; nominated for the Leipzig Book Fair Prize in the Belletristik category.
For readers interested in memoirs, in the relationship between parents and children, and in caring for people with dementia.
