«Unter der Drachenwand» is the historical novel by Arno Geiger, published by dtv Verlagsgesellschaft in paperback (480 pages, in German).
In 1944, with the war almost lost, Veit Kolbe, a soldier wounded in Russia, spends his leave in Mondsee, beneath the Drachenwand. There he meets Margot and Margarete, two women who, like him, wait for life to begin again. Geiger portrays the strange normality of the Austrian village, the dreams of its inhabitants, and love in wartime.
The novel was longlisted for the Deutscher Buchpreis 2018 and received the Bremer Literaturpreis and the Europese Literatuurprijs in 2019.
Aimed at readers of historical fiction and contemporary German literature, particularly those seeking stories about the Second World War.
