«Arbelaren gainean» is a contemporary fiction novel by writer Xabier Mendiguren Elizegi, published by Elkar in paperback (160 pages, in Basque).
A writer who, instead of inventing extraordinary characters, investigates his own family tree and finds real people full of mystery: a sensitive young man forced to become a priest and a child who, crippled, becomes a chronicler of others' games. The work integrates and comments on texts by other writers, known and anonymous, as a tribute to the power of literature.
Published in 2004, it forms number 237 of Elkar's Literatura collection.
For readers interested in current Basque narrative and in stories that explore family memory and the role of writing.
