Xenophon's Anabasis recounts the march of ten thousand Greek soldiers through the western part of the Persian Empire. After being hired as mercenaries by Cyrus the Younger to challenge his brother Artaxerxes II for the Persian throne, the Greeks were left stranded following Cyrus's defeat at the Battle of Cunaxa in 401 BC. With their generals executed, the soldiers chose new leaders, including Xenophon, to guide them through difficult terrain and hostile lands back to the coast of Asia Minor.
