Anabasis, written by Xenophon, narrates the expedition of an army of Greek mercenaries in the service of Cyrus the Younger to overthrow his brother, Artaxerxes II, king of Persia. After Cyrus's death at the Battle of Cunaxa, the Greek mercenaries find themselves abandoned in hostile territory and must fight to return home. The work is an account of adventure, military strategy, and survival in an unknown and dangerous environment.
