He was born in Kiryat Ata, Israel, on 24 February 1976, into a family of Eastern European Jewish origin.
He earned his PhD in History from the University of Oxford in 2002, specialising in medieval and military history.
Sapiens was first published in Hebrew in 2011 and reached English in 2014, going on to sell more than 25 million copies.
He practises Vipassana meditation two hours a day and undertakes a silent retreat of 30 to 60 days every year.
He is vegan and publicly advocates animal rights as a central ethical issue of the 21st century.
